The Angels of the Seas Conservation Initiative

Need ideas?

Suggestions for easy conservation projects:

Have a fish venting or release (with dehookers) at an organizational meeting.

Gulf Oil Spill -  We do not have any ideas as to what people can do, however maybe you do! We explored volunteer opportunity sites with not much luck. What we found are groups asking for donations. If anyone finds an actual way to volunteer, please post on the forum once it is up. If you do find a volunteer position, you can enter this program with it as an individual or form a volunteer group and post your info on the website. Please leave any physical contact with contaminated waters or species to those who are trained in dealing with hazardous materials. Perhaps an awareness campaign?

Research why sharks or rays should not be needlessly killed or how to release them, post a flyer on the website and distribute wherever possible. Or, make a flyer or write a speech in front of a group. Make a video.

Why handling released fish with wet hands is better than towel.

Something to prevent over fishing. Such as limit your catch, don't catch your limit stickers to put out all over the place or at pier fishing spots. Or a flyer on your website you can print out and distribute.

Something about destruction of habitats - anchoring on top of reefs, ramifications of destroying seagrass. A page on the website we provide that you can print out and distribute to tackle shops, marinas and piers or more. If it doesn't print well, have your own printable version.

Why boaters/anglers should use biodegradable or environmentally-friendly products.

Picking up fishing line, debris at one of your fishing trips.

Get with an already-going initiative in-force and document with photos as to how your group made a difference.

Turtle watch? Ideas to save turtles?

Info on hook usage, circle hooks, what happens when a hook cannot be safely removed from a fish?

Responsible marine stewardship, courtesy and safety.

Have a page on the website about conservation (will need to research) and print out that page as a flyer or poster to pass out wherever you can. Or, make a separate printed piece. You can even think about doing something that you can put in some tackle shops, schools or other places were people meet. Really love it? Write a small booklet! Make a short video!
